Preparing for your Nanny’s First Day: A Parent’s Checklist
Hiring a nanny can be a game-changer for busy families — bringing flexibility, peace of mind, and personalised care for your child. But like any new beginning, the first day can be a little daunting for everyone involved. At The Yorkshire Nanny Company, we work hard to match families with highly experienced and qualified, caring professionals. To help you get the best start with your new nanny, we’ve put together this helpful first-day checklist.

Before the First Day
1. Set expectations in writing
Before your nanny starts, it’s important that both parties are clear on:
- Hours and days of work
- Duties (child-related and household)
- House rules
- Emergency contacts
We recommend having a written agreement or schedule — this helps prevent any early misunderstandings.
2. Prepare your home
- Provide a tour of the house, including where essential items are stored (nappies, bottles, first aid kit).
- Share Wi-Fi codes, security systems, or keys if needed.
- Create a list of “must-knows” — allergies, nap times, favourite toys, feeding routines.
3. Communicate openly with your child
Explain to your child that a nanny is coming to help and care for them. Even small children pick up on big changes — a calm, positive tone helps build trust from day one.

On the First Day
1. Be present — then step back
- If you can, spend a little time with your nanny and child together at the start of the day. This helps build rapport and model trust.
- Then, step back to let them bond — children often form a connection more easily without constant parental presence.
2. Provide a written routine
Even the best nanny needs time to adjust. Give them a clear idea of your child’s:
- Eating habits
- Nap times
- Play preferences
- Behavioural cues
A simple document (or even a WhatsApp message) goes a long way.
3. Be reachable — but trust the process
It’s natural to feel nervous at first. Keep your phone on but avoid constant check-ins. Trust that your nanny is trained and experienced.

After the First Day
1. Debrief and feedback
Set aside 10–15 minutes at pick-up or end of shift to talk through the day. What went well? Any tricky moments?
Open communication builds a strong working relationship.
2. Allow time for adjustment
It can take a few days or weeks for everyone to find their rhythm. Children, especially, may need a little time to fully bond with a new carer – that’s perfectly normal.
3. Keep building trust
A great nanny-parent relationship is built on respect, communication, and trust. Don’t hesitate to praise good work, share goals, or ask for ideas — your nanny is a childcare professional, and their insights can be invaluable.
